Makima at Sunrise in Dallas

This session was created on the final morning of my recent stay in Texas, and it became one of the most memorable shoots of the entire trip. Cyberredlytical and I had been planning a Makima cosplay set for a while, and we decided to take advantage of the first hour of sunlight in downtown Dallas before I headed to the airport. That early window gave us exactly the atmosphere Makima demands. Clean directional light, warm tones, and long shadows that shape the scene without ever flattening it.

We began on the rooftop of a parking structure where the sunrise sat perfectly between the buildings. The golden light wrapped around the subject and brought out both the softness in the face and the sharp geometry of the suit. The mix of natural light and controlled flash allowed me to place emphasis on her expression while protecting the dramatic mood that Makima is known for.

Once the sun climbed higher, we moved deeper into the garage to build the second half of the set with smoke grenades. The enclosed space turned the smoke into a dense and glowing backdrop. The light bounced around the concrete surfaces and created a cinematic atmosphere that felt entirely removed from reality. This is where the cosplay came to life. The red hair caught the backlight, the coat moved with every step, and the smoke became a living texture that filled the frame.

For the close portraits we shifted to full control lighting. Dark surroundings, tight framing, and a punchy key light allowed us to push the stylized Makima look with the eyes and hair. It created a quiet intensity that stands apart from the environment shots but still belongs to the same narrative.

This series reflects my approach to cosplay photography as a whole. I work with a blend of natural and artificial light to create an emotional space around the character rather than simply documenting the outfit. Makima is a character built on presence, control, and tension. The light, the smoke, and the environment all support that feeling without ever overpowering the subject.

It was an ideal way to end a long trip. One final sunrise, one last collaboration, and another set of images that show the direction my work continues to move toward: cinematic tone, emotional focus, and intentional light shaping.
